A new online streaming music provider is on the block and Christian music lovers are the target market. Based in Toronto, The Overflow aims at providing Christians a catalog of Christian songs that big-name music streaming providers don't offer - at half the price of most music streaming subscriptions.
"It's really hard to find Christian content," said The Overflow co-founder Stephen Relph.
Most subscription services for streaming music costs $9.99 while The Overflow allows subscribers access to their catalog of over 300,000 Christian songs for only $4.99 per month. The music may be streamed from different devices.
While The Overflow might not offer millions of tracks like the bigger subscription services, the company does have the advantage of offering songs not available on other portals. The company also believes that despite the large number of music available on big catalog services, subscribers focus on their favourite genre.
Relph added, "There's a general recognition that we want to highlight a part of the catalog that doesn't get much recognition. We can bring greater value."
According to Capital Christian Distribution executive vice president Greg Bays, about half of the Christian music fans are "active in the streaming space" and "about 20 percent of the U.S. Christian/Gospel consumer base listens exclusively Christian/Gospel, and does not actively engage with other genres."
Users can avail of a one-week trial to get their feet wet in The Overflow's model for free. The designers made sure the service has the same look as other subscription services to keep it user-friendly, while offering a more targeted Christian content.
There is currently an iOS app for Apple users while a web-based version is in the works.
