Life imitates art. If you want proof of this, look no further than the view of sexuality on our television screens. It has been made to look like it's merely a reflection of the times. Same sex relationships are common place, so shouldn't they rightly be represented in every aired show?
But would they be as common place without this monkey see, monkey do relationship us humans seem to have with the screen? We like to feel like we can relate to the people reflected on our screens. We empathise. We grasp for some connection.
The 'new norm'
People are drawn in innocently to the latest hot new thing (like Orange is the New Black) without realising that their senses are not merely being desensitised into thinking that the perverse is the 'new norm', their senses are being pulverised. Like sheep lining up for the slaughter, their very sensibilities on the chopping block.
The homosexual plight is the stuff of laugh out loud comedies, of engaging dramas, of emotional soap operas... and then life follows suit. Many people wouldn't even dream of sexual experimentation normally, if it wasn't shoved down their throats constantly by every medium available.
A small minority are 'born this way'. Whereas, by comparison the vast majority are getting their same sex inclinations spoon fed them by popular media – unconsciously following suit of the 'new norm'. Just like pornography is creating rapists, the brazen homosexuality on many TV shows today is creating sexual deviants in all forms.
My own moulding
In the years before I had reached my sexual understanding, I was into watching Queer as Folk on television. There is no questioning what effect this show had on my fragile, undeveloped teenage mind at that time. As most teenagers, I was very open to suggestion and suggestions brought on by the tube are just as dangerous as ones from peers. When anyone at an impressionable age is force fed these types of ideas, they will respond in one way or another.
My own sexuality hung in the balance, but with nothing but Queer as Folk and the TV as my guide, I began to respond to my brainwashing. I experimented with girls I knew and found myself bisexual. This was something that, if I was born in another decade (such as the 50s) I wouldn't even have had the mind to explore. But I was merely a product of my generation.
Ignorance is bliss
If only we could go back to the time of innocence before mere children were destroyed by this 'new norm'. Now the most popular of television shows make sure to show plenty of same-sex action in order to please demographics. Yet the TV execs don't know the real power behind the mass desensitisation their shows are creating.
Most of us don't. We'd rather leave our children at the mercy of TV to learn the 'new norm' for themselves and then monkey see, monkey do later and become entrenched in the same behaviour. It's easier to ignore the obvious than to do anything about it.
Generations trapped in the cycle
I'm not diminishing my own sexuality, but I'm not as wilfully ignorant as most people are about what caused it. The next generation with their yuri and yaoi will be even worse than the generation I came from. An overwhelming number of this generation is already claiming pansexuality, something unheard of in previous generations.
Life continues to imitate art and we're the ones allowing those creating this 'art' to mould whole generations into lustful, sexually abandoned creatures ruled by their genitals. The only way to stop this disease is to cut off the source. Are you willing to boycott shows that test the heterosexual boundaries?
