Of course, rather than calling Ponting and discussing his field placements, Warne launched his attack using that great social networking tool 'twitter' and delivered his criticism in 140 characters or less.
Warne said "Feeling for Hauritz , terrible !! What are these tactics ? Sorry Ricky but what are you doing."
Australia lost that series convincingly, however Warne's unprovoked attack on Ponting could have a destabilising effect on the already struggling team as they head into the most important test series in Australia in the past 20 years.
The comments have also sparked other commentators to call for Ponting's head just weeks out from the Ashes campaign opener in Brisbane.
It is true that the loss in India has delivered Australia its worst losing streak in 22 years. Not since Australia lost three on the trot against the West Indies in the late 80's have we struggled this much. However, Australia has a tendency to lose on the sub-continent (Warne knows only too well about this) and given the wicket and playing conditions are so different to Australia there's not a lot you can take from the India series.
Australia has struggled to find its feet following the departure of players like Warne, Mcgrath and Hayden. The team has constantly changed looking for the right combination and players who not only give the one off great performance, but can perform day in, day out.
Although Australia has been able to scrape together more wins than loses, many of the wins have been through from other teams' failing, rather than Australia winning.
The new breed of players are still finding their feet and some are struggling to maintain their position in the team. One of those players is Nathan Hauritz. Hauritz is an off-spinner whose claim to fame was destroying the Pakistani defence in most recent Australian tour. However, we now know Pakistan threw the match for money.
Warne's comments will create that element of doubt in the team's mind about Ponting's ability to lead the team in a way that will get the best out of the players and give them the best chance of beating the POMS in the Ashes.
History is littered with failures that occurred simply because of leadership failings, or leadership was undermined by those being led or with a stone to grind.
Warne has today backed Ponting as captain but the damage has been done – the doubt has been cast.
