It's no secret that Dami's always had a passion for helping children in need. The 24-year old Queenslander and her husband Noah have been Compassion sponsors for six years.
"I wanted to do something about the poverty that goes on in the world, and I'd heard about Compassion. That was when I sponsored my first child, from India. Then, when I was still in The X Factor competition, Noah called me and told me he wanted us to sponsor a child together. It was cool, because that sort of thing kept me grounded during The X Factor competition."
Dami and her husband now support three children with Compassion: 14-year-old Somoli from India, 12-year-old Sakthivel from India and five-year-old Yann Floran Yirikou from Burkina Faso.
While travelling in India, Dami hopes to have the opportunity to meet two of her sponsored children face to face. Dami says she's looking forward to learning more about Compassion's work during the trip, and becoming even more involved in the organisation as an ambassador.
"I'm really excited about the trip! I want to see what my sponsored child's life is like, and hopefully get to know her a little bit. It will be such a great experience."
"Noah and I have always wanted to do something like this, to help othersâ€"and children in poverty in particular. Doing X Factor, and having the chance to sing, has given me a platform to do the things we've always wanted to do. This has always been our dream."
On The X Factor, the whole of Australia saw Dami grow from shy ingénue, to a first rate performer. Now, Dami wants to use her voice and her social platform to highlight the potential in the next generationâ€"no matter where they're born, or what situations they're born intoâ€"and to draw Australia's attention to the plight of children living in poverty worldwide.
"It's all about helping other people, and using our talents and gifts to help the poor. Through Compassion, I've been given the chance to reach out to others. "
Compassion Australia is thrilled to have Dami speak up on behalf of children in need. CEO Tim Hanna says the young star has the potential to make a real difference in the lives of thousands, and underline the importance of giving back to othersâ€"not just at Christmas, but all year round.
"It's such an honour to partner with Dami to help release children from poverty. Dami has a wonderful heart for Compassion Australia and has had a huge impact in the lives of her sponsored children over the past six years. As a Compassion ambassador, her impact will be even greater. Dami's generosity is a fantastic example of how we can use what we have been blessed with to bless those who are less fortunate."
Signing on as an ambassador for Compassion this month, Dami recorded a Merry Christmas message with Compassion to share the joy and encourage generosity this Christmas:
Dami has also announced that proceeds from her 'DamiArmy' t-shirts will go to Compassion Australia. Shirts can be purchased here.
