
Sydney will host the seventh World Masters Games from 10-18 October, 2009 with the motto: "Fit, fun and forever young".
There are 28 sports on the Sydney 2009 World Masters Games program. The Sydney 2009 World Masters Games Advisory Committee endorsed the sports in April 2006 and the International Masters Games Association (IMGA) approved them.
The 28 sports of the Sydney 2009 World Masters Games are divided into two categories determined by the IMGA - 15 core sports (ones that must be included in the Games) and 13 optional sports (chosen on the basis of their tradition in the Games, level of local interest and suitability/availability of venues).
The 28 sports of the Sydney 2009 World Masters Games are archery, athletics, badminton, baseball, basketball, canoe/kayak, cycling, diving, football, golf, hockey, lawn bowls, netball, orienteering, rowing, rugby union, sailing, shooting, softball, squash, surf lifesaving, swimming, table tennis, tennis, touch football, volleyball, water polo and weightlifting
Known participants with church affiliations are:
Judge Peter Grogan of St Swithun's Anglican Church, Pymble, who will be in swimming events.
Rev Dr David Smethurst, of Assemblies of God, from Sunnybank Hills, Queensland, who will be competing in the swimming, water polo and discus.
Rev Dr David Tyndall, Director Anglican Sports Ministries, Sydney, who will be running in the 100 metres and 5000 metres
Tom Treseder , former NSW State Director of the Bible Society, will compete in single sculls, double sculls and an eight.
Tom won his first World Masters single sculls in Ghent, in 1994. During the fifth World Masters Games 2002, the rowing events were held on Lake Wendouree, Ballarat, 110km (90 minutes) from Melbourne. Mr Treseder won 1 Bronze, 3 Silver and 5 Gold medals, by winning the "Pairs without coxswain" (two men with an oar each), the "Quadruple sculls" (4 men with an oar each), "Quadruple sculls" (in the 70-75 age category), "Fours with coxswain" and "Fours without coxswain".
The Sydney 2009 World Masters Games Organising Committee is expecting 25,000
competitors from more than 100 countries, including His Royal Highness The Crown
Prince of Denmark, who will compete in the open 35+ tasar sailing competition.
