The beginning of 2019 has brought some change and a lot of reflection around the plans I have for the year and what I would like to achieve. I spent some time setting up New Year’s resolutions that targeted some of the areas I kind of struggled in last year including my health and in maintaining margin in my schedule.
Fresh start
The idea of a new, fresh start and a blank slate is tantalising in terms of the endless possibilities and ‘what ifs’ at hand. I think it is also a picture of forgiveness: the old has passed away and we are living in a new season which is completely unblemished in every way. No mistakes have yet been made, no harsh words spoken, no obstacles in our path.
But we all know how this story goes and by February we have plumb forgotten what our New Year’s resolutions ever were! Reportedly, 92% of New Year’s Resolutions are never achieved. So what does it take to go the distance and to ensure the plans that we have prevail? How can we ensure success?
What is our focus?
The truth is we’re asking the wrong questions! We are focused on the goals we are seeking to achieve despite our very low levels of willpower (at least for me!) and in light of the extreme lack of control we have over our circumstances, careers, health and relationships.
Instead, what we should ask is, ‘What are the plans God has for me in the coming season?’ What are the words He wants to speak to me as I move into the new year? What are the areas of my life which need God’s healing and restoration?
When we know and understand God’s vision for us moving ahead we can live in freedom;
Because, God’s words never fail, there is no stress around striving to make goals happen!
Because, God’s promises are always true, we can never feel guilt about failure, it’s His job to see this goal through!
Because, God knows the future and His plans for us are for our good, there is no fear of the future!
So there is peace, because when we choose to align our life and our goals with God’s not only are we working with Him towards something that will actually last forever, we are living with him and experiencing rest and joy in every season, every day of our year.
“Listen for God's voice in everything you do, everywhere you go; he's the one who will keep you on track.” (Proverbs chapter 3, verse 6)
What is God’s vision for your life for the year ahead?
