I have always admired how at the highest point of leadership Solomon asked the Lord for wisdom. He could have had anything else, but in measuring the weight of leadership Solomon’s request was for the ability to discern inner qualities and relationships.
If King Solomon, with the responsibility of leading a nation, thought it important to have good sense, make good judgement, and have insight, how much more of us, who do not daily come close to making such decisions as a King would.
Freely Ask, Freely Receive
In James chapter 1 verse 5, we are encouraged in faith to ask God if we lack wisdom. “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.”
More and more, with responsibilities of growing children, making financial decisions for my family, and making career moves in an effort to create a life suitable for my family and future, the necessity for wisdom becomes more and more imperative.
It is so comforting to know that in times when I lack the insight and discernment to make the right decision, especially regarding the future, I can freely ask God who freely gives.
Our God is lacking in nothing, so it’s no surprise that He has instructed us to ask Him if we lack wisdom.
More important to note, is that God knows all things, He has every answer we need to make any present or future decision and He has made this wisdom available to anyone who would ask.
We can therefore rest in His promise when he assured us that if we ask, we shall receive. If we seek we shall find and if we knock the door shall be open to us.
Hearts Applied to Wisdom
In the book of Proverbs chapter 4, verse 7, the writer explains that ‘wisdom is the principal thing, therefore get wisdom.’ Earlier in the same book chapter 2 verse 6, we are told again where wisdom comes.’
There are many other scripture verses that speak to the importance of obtaining wisdom. So why is it so important?
I’m suggesting that the outlook that one possesses about life, people, and his or her future is put into perspective when viewed from the lens of wisdom. When we can make decisions from a sober place of discernment, sensible and wise thinking. Having a good quality of judgement because of our experiences, we are not quick to judge nor quick to make moves that will not be beneficial.
Wisdom opens our minds and guides our hearts’ desires to make reasonable, knowledgeable, understanding decisions. I suppose that is why in Psalm chapter 90 verse 12, the writer stated “So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.”
A viewpoint of life from a place of humility makes one more open to making wise decisions.
Let us Love Wisdom
It is so easy to say we are waiting on God, do our own thing, get disappointed, resubmit ourselves to God and then return to doing things our own way. This is what leaning to our own understanding looks like. I don’t know about you, but this cycle can be quite draining and frustrating but I often find myself in the same predicament
In Proverbs chapter 16 verse 16 we are encouraged, “How much better to get wisdom than gold, to get insight rather than silver!” a reminder that in all our getting, we should get wisdom.
Instead of doing things our own way, I’m encouraging us to seek after God’s wisdom. The scriptures have described it to be more precious than gold and silver. Additionally, if you desire to understand the fear of God and find the knowledge of God as I am, He will definitely guide your steps.
Let us incline our ears unto wisdom, so we may truly please God and live transformed lives.
