There are various 'function fellowships groups' in our church, whose aim is to assist people to know the Lord better in a variety of ways. I originally thought it might take some time for me to serve in such a 'function fellowship group. But thank the Lord for using me in order that I might serve as from May.
Tithe with faith
My idea of tithing comes from my friend Robert, a devout Christian of 30 years. I recall how we had a serious discussion about tithing last year. “It is not about the money you give, it's about your willingness and faith” explained Robert.
“A tithe of everything from the land, whether grains from the soil or fruit from the trees, belong to the LORD; it is holy to the LORD” (Leviticus chapter 27), cited Robert.
I didn’t even know the Lord a year ago and to give one tenth of my wage without knowing where the money goes seemed unbelievable! My idea of tithing changed as I begin to know the Lord more! I thank the Lord for patiently instructing me in these matters and understand that everything I have comes from Him! I was baptized at Easter this year and I started to tithe in May.
Who will benefit from the money and where does the money go are not my concerns, for Colossians chapter 3 verses 23 says: “whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.”
Sharing is caring
To make the most of my language advantages, I began to share my English 'learning experience' with some church members last Wednesday. My class is held at the church each Wednesday evening. Surprisingly, my 'students' are half retirees and half middle-aged office workers, who were never given an opportunity to learn English when they were younger.
Most of them know little English. Some of them struggled to introduce themselves in English. Therefore, I commenced my teaching with 'English self-introduction'. Students were required to introduce themselves in English one by one. I corrected their mistakes among the expressions, and then we discussed the appropriate grammar and wording together.
Some of the students picked it up very quickly and were able to apply the right expressions very quickly. I’m happy that I am serving with this talent God has given me. “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.” (1 Peter chapter 4 verse 10)
Spread the gospel
The more I understand God’s mercy and love, the more I wish other people, especially my friends, might also know about this good news. Most Chinese people are not exposed to Christianity unless they have a Christian friend.
My question relates to those who don’t have Christian friends. Realising the significance of receiving the Lord as the 'saviour of life', I constantly pray that God could bless my friends and my relatives through me. Moreover, to let them know the Lord through my testimony. “For whoever has accepted His testimony has certified that God is truthful.” (John chapter 3 verse 33)
Meanwhile, I share the gospel with my non-Christian friends when and where possible. Some of them are interested in knowing more, but some of them are immune to what I say. However, it’s not me who could do anything much to influence others’ faith. What I do is to put 'the seed' in their hearts. It is God who prepares them and lets their faith grow.
I feel blessed that I am able to do something to serve. “Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord.” (Romans chapter 12, verses 11).
