After I had completed the baptism classes at my church in Beijing, I was encouraged to join a regular bible study group. “Your spiritual life will grow with the help of the group.” suggested the teacher.
The idea was not appealing to me as I thought that I could totally grow by exploring the Bible alone. That’s how I have usually dealt with things during to my twenty-five years’ life experience.
Chinese Bible Study Group
I insisted on reading the Bible alone for about three months until one day, when I got this message from the teacher. “We have a Chinese Bible study group on every Tuesday evening. We are looking forward to meeting you there,” said the message.
That was the Tuesday as I leaving for work. I stared at the message for a few seconds and then put the Bible in my bag before leaving. I went and my time with the group turned out to be enjoyable!
I was warmly welcomed by the group members. The teacher guided us through Bible reading, verse by verse. Then we discussed questions together and everyone shared their opinions freely.
I was surprised to hear various questions I wouldn’t have thought of myself. The views shared by different person were interesting; and from this observation I found that everyone has their unique standpoints in observing things. In the end, the verses were fully explored and the questions were resolved through discussions.
Besides, I felt that God was among us when we were singing and praying together. He spoke to us during the discussion and praise. “For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.” (Matthew chapter 18, verse 20)
That’s the first time I understood the power of being in a group. I should never be too proud of myself and underestimate the strength of the group.
English Bible Study Group
My friend Yi Qing whispered in my ear - “I found a wonderful English Bible study group! Do you want to join us?”.
I had met obstacles in understanding the original meaning of some scriptures due to the translation. I considered it might be a good chance to digest God’s words in the English Bible study.
I participated in this English Bible study group with Yi Qing at one Saturday evening. The group was led by a British teacher, Martin. He explained every verse in detail and appreciated the subtlety of words.
In addition, Martin also raised various questions to guide us for deep thinking. My mind was drained at some point when pondering on the questions. However, I was rewarded with great satisfaction when I got the answer right.
The group is amazing! I’m glad that I came and persevered in joining the group again later.
The English Teaching Group
“Do you want to teach kids English after your baptism?” Pastor Yan asked me during our second talk before baptism.
Having benefitted from two Bible study groups, I thought it was time for me to contribute my share to others. I feel that God is using me through the language talent which He has given me. There is no reason for me to decline such a remarkable proposal.
“Yes!” I replied.
I had several experiences in teaching kids’ English during my college years. It is a blessing that I could make the most of my language advantage and serve more people now.
My first class is arranged on May 16th. Hopefully God will enlighten me continually so that I can speak to the children by faith.
Not giving up meeting together
It’s marvellous that I keep drawing strength from groups; and now I’m given the chance to serve and deliver the strength to others.
Brothers and sisters, “Not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encourage one another and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” (Hebrews: chapter 10, verse 25).
