God speaks in many ways

By Lovely Lao - Pres Service International Columnist

In the process of making this article, it seemed I couldn’t finish it, like there was a missing piece. I couldn’t figure out what it was and so I had to pass this one as I “wrestled” with God for the content.

It’s actually about my cat that I chose to adopt when he was maybe a week old, rescued near the creek by one of the kids in our church, and given to me. I named him Creek for he was found there. But, I never thought that God would pour out revelations of who He is and the vastness of His love as a Father through my adopted pet.

The power of words

A week or two after I decided to nurse the kitten, his fur started falling out and I noticed some skin disorder developing. I stopped the kitten food I was giving him to eliminate the problem, but he was just getting worse. And I could sense he was suffering despite being energetic and playful. So I prayed to God to let my kitten live because, I thought to myself, I don’t want anything under my care to die..

God answered my prayer, but my kitten was getting uglier and I was so stressed out researching the solution to his health problem. Believe me, I wanted to take him to the vet, but I didn’t have spare money during that season of my life. This was also frustrating.

Many times, I thought of letting my kitten go so that whatever happened to him, I wouldn’t be guilty of it. In the process of considering things, I felt God asked me this question out of the blue, “What kind of a Master do you think I am?”

And His words hit me! If I were that adopted kitten, God would surely not throw me out because He is a good Master!

God made me realize that He does not throw us away as adopted sons and daughters simply because we are a stress to him or we look ugly before His eyes, or because everything is not going according to His will.

Instead, God sees to it that our concerns as adopted sons and daughters are addressed and that His will and plans in our lives is done according to His power and sovereignty.

Just like my kitten! I needed see to it that he would grow up healthy and beautiful just as I desired! God taught me the power of our words for He said in Proverbs chapter 18, verse 21 that “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.”

So every single day, I started talking to my kitten declaring that he was handsome, had a beautiful fur coat, and was very healthy.

The fruit of everything

After about six to seven months of going through the seasons with Creek, he’s health was finally stable, and has beautiful, unique patterns on his body. And, accidentally, my husband found out through the internet that my cat is no ordinary cat for he is an American shorthair silver tabby, which is uncommon in our place. Lucky me as the people from our church were saying. The kitten I once thought to be a zombie cat is now a healthy and handsome silver tabby.

His personality has developed as he has grown up and he has eventually lost some human friends because he is not the type of cat to mess with. But I love this cat whatever his personality is. After all, between me and him, I’ve seen his sweetest side that no other could.

Surely, God’s message in this experience is clear: that He will never ever give up on us no matter what we are becoming. Once an adopted son and daughter in the Kingdom, the Father will never ever throw us away, just as He taught me not to give up on my cat. It is in the worse seasons of our lives that God is actually closest to us, watching every detail of our being, making sure not a piece gets broken.

Lastly, to never forget the power of words! Speak life in every bad situation and eat the fruit later!
