The Lord shows me many things about His Word through dreams, and a serious issue He has brought up before, and again recently, is the importance of repentance.
I had a dream recently where I was riding a dirt bike and was doing a wheelie and hit a man’s car as he was inside it. After I hit his car I quickly sped away as I heard the man yelling behind me. As I was riding away I saw he was following in his car and I pulled off the road into what I thought was impassable terrain and left the bike and started to flee on foot.
I went through a hole in a fence and kept running into a sewer area but whenever I looked back I saw the man was following me, and he was after me with a weapon. In the dream I was shocked I hadn’t completely lost him so I continued to run away and entered a building.
Trying to escape the consequences of sin
As I ran inside the building the man appeared close behind me. I ran through a number of rooms and opened a door to a large room only to find he was there in front of me: impossibly, he’d been able to get ahead of me.
As he approached me I stood my ground and finally was convicted and said, “I’m really sorry for damaging your car, I’ll pay for the repairs and your lost time.” Once I said this the scene completely disappeared and I saw a white wall with a small bug on it that started to frantically crawl away.
I recognised this bug was not a good thing and I put my finger forward and squished it. Sometimes in my dreams the Lord represents exposing hidden evil as crushing insects. I had the feeling that because I had apologised (repented) I had been passed over in judgment.
The scene changed back to the building I had been running in and this was confirmed as I saw members of the man’s family also running to chase after me, but they had a puzzled look as they couldn’t understand why they were there and who they were chasing after, and turned around and started to leave as the dream ended.
The only true escape
I believe this dream I received was from the Lord and signified the importance of apologising for the wrongs we commit to others. I was not able to escape the man and I believe his ability to appear closer and closer, and even in front of me, was showing that I was unable to escape the consequences of my actions by running and any fleshly means.
What completely delivered me from the judgment of this man was sincerely apologising and committing to rectify the wrong I had caused. In this way I also repented before the Lord for the sin I committed and the authority of the man or the enemy to come against me in judgment for my actions was negated; I was passed over in judgment. This was my interpretation that I believe is true and I feel the Lord was showing me the importance of repenting for our wrongs we commit to others and before God.
The importance of repentance
The importance of repentance is conveyed in the Bible where we repent before God and ask for forgiveness of our sins:
“Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord.”
(Acts chapter 3, verse 19)
“For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted; but the sorrow of the world produces death.”
(2 Corinthians chapter 7, verse 10)
Repentance is integral to being born again from our old man and renewed from our old sins in Jesus Christ: our sins are covered by His shed blood and thus we pass from death to life and no longer face condemnation. We are given counsel personally in Luke chapter 17, verse 3:
“Take heed to yourselves. If your brother sins against you, rebuke him; and if he repents, forgive him.”
In my dream I sinned against a man and could not escape the consequences of my actions, but when I repented not only did the man’s wrath against me completely stop but his family’s wrath also passed over me. I believe this shows the Lord is so good to forgive us and can spare us the consequences of sin when we repent.
Repentance before God is vital and is conveyed in many lessons in the Scripture, with repentance being linked to avoiding God’s wrath.
“Then he said to the multitudes that came out to be baptised by him, “Brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Therefore bear fruits worthy of repentance…”
(Luke chapter 3, verses 7 to 8)
Jesus spoke words conveying the importance of repentance,
“Or those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them, do you think that they were worse sinners than all other men who dwelt in Jerusalem? I tell you, no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish.”
(Luke chapter 13, verses 4 to 5)
The Lord continues to show me that repentance is vital to the purification process by the Spirit of the Lord that refines us, allowing us to grow closer to the Lord. Not only this but I believe the Lord conveyed through this dream that repentance can be the only means of avoiding judgment, and that we should be quick to apologise and make right if possible, the wrongs we have committed to others.
The comfort I felt in my dream of being spared a judgment was a peace to my soul and a reminder of the vital importance of repentance.
