I had a very encouraging dream recently. In this dream I was with a group of Christians in a spiritual place trying to complete a difficult test of cooperation together.
The adult male and female Christians were coming up with different ideas, but I knew they were wrong, and they seemed to me to be acting foolishly, not taking things seriously. I knew they had attempted this test over and over but failed every time.
One of the men who was influencing and leading the group asked me to follow his idea to draw a face on our stomach over our clothing. All the team wanted me to do it though I didn’t want to as I knew it was a waste of time. I did it anyway for their sake, but of course it did nothing to lead us to overcome the trial. We were in a circle and they were talking boldly about giving up and trying again next time, even though we had more time to complete the test.
Stubbornness and self-importance
This angered me and I spoke up that we shouldn’t give up and that we have plenty of time left. I told them I know how to solve this trial if they will hear me out. I knew what needed to be done as led by the Holy Spirit. As soon as I started talking they ignored me and started talking over me, refusing to listen. I was telling them to be quiet but they kept on talking, so I started raising my voice and shouting for them to be quiet and listen.
A woman with her back towards me was walking backwards into the center of the circle looking to her left and right telling people to stop talking and to listen, but I told her off also as she refused to remain silent or listen and was disruptive, even though she thought she was helping.
Once I yelled at her she turned around incensed and was loudly protesting, and one of the men came to attack me aggressively, so I fought against him prevailing against him and others who wanted to attack me. There was a certain trouble maker instigating division in the group and I defeated him too. It was like I was acting as a Drill Sergeant as I was yelling at the group to be silent and listen. I was fed up with their foolish and selfish behaviour and their refusal to listen, and I know God has felt this way many times with His children: “For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the Lord…”(1 Samuel chapter 15 verse 23).
Discipline leading to corrected behaviour
As I yelled at them and fought and defeated those who wanted to fight, I noticed something amazing happen. They all seemed to snap out of their confusion and selfish stupor and began to be serious and start cooperating with all of their efforts, including those who previously were inciting division.
I was shocked as I saw them all begin to dance and work together, and I heard music as they began to sing in an uplifting and joyful manner these words repeatedly: “Use the best that you have got! Use the best that you have got! Use the best that you have got!” We were all working together in perfect unison in the Lord as I saw a montage of them dancing and singing in teamwork.
As all obstructions were taken out of the way we climbed a stairwell and they sung: “When you get near the top, look back and ask did you do the best that you have got?” and “I could have done the best that I have got!” and we entered a room where there was a female in white robes playing a harp who I believe was an angel and the dream ended.
I believe that my actions in the dream to bring correction to the group represented the discipline of the Lord to His children, to lead us back to waiting on the Lord and obeying the Holy Spirit. It was not easy and took effort for the team to turn around. I was led by the Holy Spirit to correct, but in their stubbornness they refused to listen.
I didn’t back down and I rebuked them sharply, and by harsh discipline they snapped out of their foolishness and became a fully operational and highly effective team. It was a profound transformation.
I believe God was showing me the power of His correction to bring us to work together as a powerful team in the body of Christ. We know that God disciplines us as His children. Hebrews chapter 12 verse 8: “But if you are without chastening, of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate and not sons.” Also in Revelation chapter 3 verse 19: “As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten. Therefore be zealous and repent.”
What God did was use discipline to bring His children into the right mindset to work together, allowing us to lay aside any selfish behaviour and truly cooperate as one in the Spirit of the Lord. I knew we had accomplished the trial and were now a group ready to serve the Lord in obedience.
Doing your best
The words of the song stood out to me as simple and effective motivation. The words “Use the best that you have got” means to do your best with what you have, doing your best in whatever situation, with whatever you have. I really appreciate this because it recognises that people have different situations, different burdens, trials and sufferings.
I believe that God wants us to do our best in every situation we face. When we neared the top of the stairs the words, “When you get near the top, look back and ask did you do the best that you have got?” is a powerful question leading to reflection and an earnest desire of continual improvement. We are encouraged to do our best. 1 Corinthians chapter 10 verse 31: “Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.”
If we do everything to the Lord then it should be our best! Likewise in Colossians chapter 3 verse 23: “And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men.”
I found this dream very motivating and worth sharing. I know that we are all subject to the Lord’s chastening and correction. Know that His righteous discipline will help us to do our best in Him and work together. Let us all seek to do our best in the Lord Jesus Christ always!
