Last month, I had the privilege of speaking at the Australian Christian Lobby (ACL) South Australian State Conference. I spoke about what I have gained from the ACL and what you could gain too. In this article I want to share my speech with you as well and raise a call to arms!
The ACL challenged me to not just know about the circumstances our nation faces, but to raise my voice for what is right and what is true.
“For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine…They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry.”
2 Timothy Chapter 4 Verse 3 to 5
You don’t need to have a background in politics or law and you certainly don’t need to be an expert to volunteer with the ACL. All I did was put my hand up and say, “I’m available, I can help.”
And since being affiliated with the ACL I have:
- Helped collect petitions for the “Nordic Model” approach to prostitution to be legislated here in South Australia.
- Written letters to MPs regarding the proposed “abortion to birth” bill and even met with some MPs in person.
- I have met some amazing people and other worthy organisations
- Furthermore, through becoming passionate and proactive in my Christian beliefs and advocating for biblical values and truths in our culture, I am consolidating my faith.
I believe that God wants to raise up a generation who will know their God and do great exploits. A generation of DOERS of the word, not just hearers. A generation that would be vessels of God’s love and show compassion to the poor, lost, deceived and hurt.
I think the lyrics of the song “Hosanna” by Brooke Fraiser sums this vision up perfectly.
I see a generation
Rising up to take their place
With selfless faith
With selfless faith
Heal my heart and make it clean
Open up my eyes to the things unseen
Show me how to love
Like You have loved me
Break my heart for what breaks Yours
Everything I am
For Your kingdom’s cause
We don’t need a title to speak up on issues that break the heart of God and we certainly don’t need to be popular. God doesn’t always use the talented, He uses those who are available.
We serve a supernatural God who does extraordinary things, through ordinary people. And just as Isaiah said, “Here I am, send me!” (Isaiah Chapter 6 verse 8) You can say those words too.
I think we need to ask ourselves an important question:
Where are the leaders of Australia leading us?
The SA Greens recently introduced the “abortion to birth” bill. If passed, what is the message it is sending into our communities?
Just recently, the Australian Medical Student Association’s Global Health Department released a statement saying they have become an active supporter of the NSW pro-choice alliance and that they campaigned for abortion in the NSW state election and will be campaigning again for the Federal election!
What is that saying about life?
How is it that today the most dangerous place for a child is the womb?
What kind of culture is our country leading us into?
But, I also want to ask, where do you want to be led?
What kind of values do you want to see at the heart of this country?
And that’s why I love the Australian Christian Lobby!
What’s our mission? Human flourishing. To see the dignity of every human person respected. Not just the wanted or accepted. The Australian Christian Lobby stands for Christians, that’s you and me. Most importantly, we stand for the truth.
We all have the responsibility to speak up if we see an issue – especially as Christians.
It says in Habakkuk chapter 1 verse 13b, “Should you be silent while the wicked swallow up people more righteously than they?”
This is our time now. What will we do?
As Christians we are called to be the light of the world and the salt of the earth!
“For we cannot oppose the truth but must ALWAYS stand for the truth.”
2 Corinthians Chapter 13 Verse 8
It is our duty to advocate truth and righteousness in this world.
As Christian citizens of this country, we have a right to be heard and an obligation to express our views.
We know what is right and what the Lord requires of us (Micah chapter 6 verse 8)…. So let’s go out and do the work of the Lord!
I now challenge you to get involved!
What choices can you make from today?
- Intercede in prayer
- Get active on social media
- Get informed! Know what is happening in our nation! For example, watch the ACL “truth of it” episodes
- Develop a network of good people!
- Get to know your local member! So many people only see their local member when there’s a problem! How much more influential could you be if we went to see our member to encourage him/her?!
- Most of all, give your name to your ACL state director and support the cause!
You may never run for PM, but your influence can be felt everywhere if you are willing to intercede and be the voice for Jesus Christ!
“It is not by might nor by power but by my spirit says the Lord, Almighty!”
Zechariah Chapter 4 Verse 6
